47 grants totaling $127,819.75...
 

In April, 2009, the Hallsville ISD Education Foundation awarded $17,640.47 for five grants to 19 teachers.  Each grant is summarized below.

 

It’s All Over the World........................................................................................... $4,710.16
This grant will provide students at Hallsville Middle School with special maps to enhance their learning of Social Studies.  Maps are fundamental teaching tools which bring the world to a student and put the “where” into perspective.  The best way to practice map skills is to use real maps.  By giving students their own maps, they will be able to explore foreign lands and be provided with another source which will aid them to better understand the cultures of the world.  These maps are laminated, so students can write on them during their lessons, and then they can be cleaned off easily to use again.

6th Grade Is Set To Go!.......................................................................................... $2,795.10
This grant will equip 6th Grade Teachers at Hallsville Middle School with Vernier technology that connects to the teacher’s computer.  This technology enables graphs to be produces as data is collected, strengthening students’ understanding of mathematical relationships and science concepts.  Students will use a motion detector, temperature probes, and a high resolution microscope camera that records still and video images.  The teacher can use this data in presentations and assessments.  Overall, this technology provides the teacher with tools that use real time data collected in the classroom, strengthening students’ learning.

iSpeak-iListen-iSpeak-iLearn with iPod................................................................ $3,856.00
This grant will allow ESL teachers at Hallsville Primary School to creatively incorporate the use of iPods to engage and motivate their English language learners in the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.  Various lessons, including the classroom teacher’s videotaped lessons, can be loaded into the iPod, and the students can take the iPod home for further learning reinforcement.  This will extend the learning time beyond the classroom and bridge a connection between school and home.

Interactive Reader’s Theater................................................................................. $3,093.00
This grant will allow teachers at the Hallsville Elementary School to use both books and computer technology to increase students’ fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and reading comprehension.  Various fiction and nonfiction genres will support language arts, science, social studies, and math standards.  The texts are multileveled to accommodate students’ different reading levels.  Students, however, will not be aware of this, so all students will feel comfortable to participate in the activities, thus creating an atmosphere of community in the classroom.

6th Grade is Versa-tile in HISD............................................................................... $3,186.21
This grant will purchase Versa Tiles, manipulative puzzles that can be used to assess student comprehension of multiple concepts in the areas of reading, language arts, science, and math.  Students complete activities and answer questions using tile pieces.  Once questions are answered and tile pieces are laid in their answer box, the students turn them over to see if their pattern matches the answer key.  If it doesn’t match, students can then self-correct their answers in a nonthreatening manner.  Versa Tiles are fun and allow students to kinesthetically engage themselves in the lesson content.
